Book review: “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell

Going into Fangirl was really easy for me. I have heard of it a lot of mixed opinions, so I guess I didn’t expect much from it. However, I had in mind an idea of what this book might be [since I am a Fangirl myself], and I thought I would give it a shot.

To be quite honest, it wasn’t what I expected at all. I thought that I would get to read more about a fangirl. Sure, Cath, the main character is a fangirl, but not a big one. But this is not my only problem with the book.

Obviously, this is fiction, so the book isn’t supposed to be necessarily close to reality. But a book about a Fangirl has to describe a Fangirl from a real point of view. We only got to see a ‘true’ fangirl at the end of the book when the characters attended a book release. Which was a huge let down for me.

Another major no-no from me was the anxiety. I have anxiety issues, but not on the level Cath does. She has a lot of anxiety issues which unfortunately transferred to me whilst reading.

Usually, my anxiety strikes when I am in new places, meeting new people or trying something new. But this book, gave me so much anxitey that I thought I would have a panic attack if I wouldn’t have taken a break from it.

And my last problem with the book was the ‘otp’ the character loved. Now, don’t get me wrong…I don’t care what she likes, but it wasn’t even a real fandom she was in. I mean “Simon Snow”? Who is that??? Apparently that ‘fandom’ was a darker version of Harry Potter.

Why didn’t the author use Harry Potter as Cath’s favorite books? My only guess is that she wanted to create a fictional world for her fictional character to read, which is great, but don’t make it like Harry Potter. I don’t think Rainbow Rowell couldn’t use  Harry Potter in her books because of copyright issues. I am sure they would have let her do that… it was just so bad!

I mean…here is a quote from the book:

Levi said. “It’s hard for me to get my head around. It’s like hearing that Harry Potter is gay.”

Why is she referencing Harry Potter after having based the entire book around a fictionalized version of Harry Potter known as Simon Snow? Why didn’t she write about Harry and Draco and had to create Simon and Baz? [that’s actually what she did but she just changed their appearance.]

The only things I liked about this book are the flow of the words and all the characters [besides Wren].

I cannot say anything bad about Rainbow Rowell’s writing style. Her words flow over the page very smoothly and it is really pleasant to read. Both her dialogues and descriptive parts were really well written and thus a quick read.

Also, she built her characters very well. I liked reading about each one of them, except Wren because she is a brat. I really appreciate that Cath didn’t forgive their mother, I don’t think I would have either.

I cannot give this book more than 3.5 stars. I really wish I could because I wanted it to be so good! I really liked the story itself, but it should have been called something else, not Fangirl, because it doesn’t show almost at all what a fangirl really is…and than if you add all the other issues I mentioned before, it really is impossible to like this.

Sorry if I offended anyone with this review…some of you might love this book, others might hate it, but this is just what I thought of it. So, please, be kind :D.

Until next time,

Lexi xoxo!

P.S. I am sorry for a month without posts. I was quite busy during the month of August, but I will try to get back on track.

Summer On My Mind

Hey there,

I had in mind to write a post about summer but I don’t quite know what, so  I decided to share my summer plans with you. This summer I decided to do a lot of things for myself. I decided to read a lot, to watch a lot of TV shows and to draw a bunch!

Obviously, I will never get to do everything that I want, but on a small part I will manage to accomplish all of my selfish little needs.

My godmother insisted to visit her this summer, but I decided that this being my last summer at home totally free, it won’t work because I want to do what I want, not what others want. And I want FUN! I want to spend my time with my family, to catch up on reading and TV shows that I missed during the school year, all kinds of cool stuff. At least, that is what I think it is cool…

So far, my plans have been going good, the cause of this happening is that the weather is really sh***y so I cannot do anything else other than staying inside. So, since the summer holidays have started, I’ve read 5 and a half books, LOL; have caught up on the shows: Castle and The 100, and I am currently working on The Big Bang Theory; also I have been drawing some bits and pieces.

Drawing seems to be my weak spot. I definitely have to focus a bit more on that seeing that I have to finish a project very soon…can’t show or tell you what yet, but you will see, all in good time 🙂 .

Since summer started I have been iPad-less, which means that I don’t really have time or feel like writing many blog posts, which has also been one of my summer goals. However, tomorrow or on Monday, I will get it back and I will catch up on writing all of my book reviews and other fun blog posts.

So far, this blog post has been all about me. If you have gotten this far, please tell me down below in the comments, what do you want to do this summer? Do you have any goals? Will you have a fun summer filled with adventures, or will you stay at home and read, just like I have been doing? I would sure love to see your little stories 🙂 .

Love you all, stay safe until the next ramble.

Hugs and kisses,

Lexi xoxo!

What’s been going on?

Hello everyone,

How have you all been? It feels like years since I’ve done a blog post. Last month was hectic for me. I just finished another year of high school and I had to get ready for the big final tests and what not, so that didn’t really give me the free time to take care of my blog as well. But hey, I am here now, aren’t I?

Now that the summer vacation is here, I plan on reading more, drawing more and writing more. I will definitely be more active, now that summer is here. You can expect some very cool book and movie reviews, along with some stories about life in general and other little random rambles.

I hope that some people are still around and have stuck with me. Also, I hope I didn’t bore anyone to death with this post. I am sorry if you really do not care about where I have been, but I just wanted to update everyone.

If you are still here and hopefully have gotten this far into this post, PLEASE leave down a comment about what are you excited this summer. Is it a fun trip to somewhere? A reunion with your family and friends? Or probably just lazying around and catching up on your favorite TV shows…I know I am excited for that.

Stay tuned for a ton of fun posts this summer. 😀

Many hugs,

Lexi. xoxo

The fandoms war & HP mania !

ghcUqI1391447616Right at the beginning of the month a very shocking interview came out and the entire Harry Potter fandom[1] went crazy!

According to the interview, J.K. Rowling said that she regrets marrying Hermione to Ron in the internationally known story. And of course, after hearing this “outrageous” piece of information the Romione[4] shippers[2] went nuts.

Firstly, I want to add the article so that you can see the exact words that were said by the famous writer:

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment.* That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.

I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.

*(Rowling has often stated that the character of Hermione bears several personality traits in common with her creator.)

Apparently she wasn’t breaking Emma’s, who replied “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.

And to twist the basilisk fang she just stabbed shippers in the collective heart with, Rowling added that as it is, Ron and Hermione would probably need relationship counseling. Wow. You hear that, Ginny Weasley? It wasn’t supposed to be you.

Or you could find a big part of the interview here.

A thing that is not included in the excerpt is that Rowling says that Hermione would have been a better match for Harry, than Ginny is.

Now, let’s get some things straight! The people who went all crazy about this have no right to be, because she is the author and she has every right of expressing her thoughts and opinions on her work.

And to those who have been saying really, really nasty things about her: If she hadn’t write the story, you wouldn’t have anything to fight about now…

Me, as a Dramione[3] shipper, I am happy about this piece of information because I share JKR’s and Emma’s opinion. And that is Ron not being able to make Hermione happy in their future together. And I know that there will come questions like: “Why? They are so perfect together!”..Well, I feel that Hermione’s witty personality, intelligence and just her general characteristics would make Ron unable to make her happy over the years.

Now, I am not saying that Ron is stupid and ugly for Hermione, no. I am only saying that Hermione’s type should be more like her regarding the personality traits and also the physical ones.

That was my honest opinion, and I hope that I won’t get much hate for expressing my opinion regarding this interview, and also these relationships between some very well known characters throughout the whole world.

I need to post the definition of some terms that I used. If you were interested and actually read this, than you know for sure these words, but there might be people that don’t know them.

  1. fandom=is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest.
  2. shipper=derived from the word relationship, is the belief that two people, fictional or non-fictional, would be interesting or believable (or are, or will be, or should be) in a romantic relationship.
  3. Dramione=Draco+Hermione
  4. Romione=Ron+Hermione

Until next time, keep safe and far from Romione shippers :)),

Lexi xxxxxx! 🙂
